Environment & Technology

1.3 Soil formation (Daniel & Karla)

Soil is formed continuously, but slowly, when rocks break down due to weathering. Weathering is a process that can be physical, chemical, or biological:

Physical weathering is the deterioration of rocks caused by mechanical activity. Changes in temperature, abrasion (when rocks clash), and frost can all cause rocks to break down.
Chemical weathering refers to the deterioration of rocks caused by a change in their chemical composition. When the minerals in rocks react with water, air, or other chemicals, this can happen.
The degradation of rocks by living organisms is known as biological weathering. Plant roots can grow into fractures in the rock, causing it to split. Burrowing animals let water and air get into the rock, and plant roots can grow into crevices in the rock, causing it to break.

The term "soil type" refers to a variety of physical and chemical features of a soil. These properties, along with the impacts of the surrounding environment, life in the soil, and human management of the soil, affect the soil's attributes and overall soil quality.

Young soil is relatively light brownish.

  1. Parents material- it determines colour, texture, properties, minerals chemical.
  2. Relief -altitude,slope.
  3. Climate ,rainfall, rate of weathering and humus.
  4. Biological humus- flora fauna, micro organisation.
  5. time- thickness- mature -soil formation.

Quiz question:

Wie entstehen Fossil Fuels?

In this picture we drew the different levels on creating fossil fuels. In the first level all the plants are growing. In the second one they are falling to the floor and going into the first level. In the last level we see the pressure and heat transforming it into coal.

Befter Step 5: Reflection

Our project was very fun and interesting to do. The project went along very smoothly, we didn't really have big issues. The only issue we really had was with technical stuff regarding our survey, but we made it work.

Our communication with Kerala was amazing, they always replied within 12 hours and always sent us their things on time. The team was very nice and friendly.

When we had a plan, we went through with it. Each week Anabel and I made plans on what we wanted to have prepared until the next lesson and it worked very well.

Our interview with Anabel's half-sister, Liliane Sutter went just like we hoped. We got more than enough information for our project and because of Liliane's character, it was very fun and went very smoothly.

Our survey got filled out by many people because we asked the school's secretary to send it around to all students and teachers. The only issue with it was that when we changed a few questions because of grammatical errors and redeployed them, a lot of answers were lost. But we quickly found a way to work with it and in the end, we got more than enough answers.

We also tried to contact Eugen from Guerillagardens to get some input and maybe even plant our own little plant. Sadly he never replied to us, so we couldn't do that.

All in all, our project went exactly as we wanted it and we are very happy with our end result.

Project Medical plants reflection 1. Semester

How far have we come?

In this semester we worked together with Team Kerala. We had a very good time working together and they were very friendly and helpful.

We learned a lot and we did a lot of research, which I think is going to be useful for the future as well.

For me personally, I liked the interview with Anabel's half-sister the best. The conversation was very fun and I learned a lot. We got a lot of information and I thought it was very interesting. She was very helpful and showed us fun things. There were a lot of cool facts, which I think I can also use for myself in the future.

Final touches 08.07.21

Today we edited the post for our final post. We are happy with the end product. We worked on details like grammar and we also added definitions.

We also worked on the evaluation of our survey. It's going pretty well. The only issue is, that some answers disappeared because of some technical issues, but other than that it went well.

Klimapavillon

Anabel and I wanted to get in contact with the people at Guerilla Gardens. Our idea was to plant a dandelion and get more information for our project. We wanted to ask a few questions that we could incorporate into our project and how to better it. We thought it would be pretty cool especially planting the dandelion.

Sadly, they never wrote back to us, so we couldn't get in contact.
