How much does traffic cost the general public?
External costs are costs that are not paid by the transport users themselves, but by the general public (e.g. air pollution), third parties (e.g. accidents) or future generations (global warming).
Total external costs of transport in 2017: CHF 13.4 billion. Of this, CHF 9.5 billion or 71% is attributable to private motorised transport, distributed as follows:
- Air pollution 3.3 billion
- Noise 2.1 billion
- Climate 1.6 billion
- Nature and landscape 990 million
- Accidents 730 million
Per passenger kilometre, private motorised transport costs the general public 7.8 centimes. For comparison: public road transport 6.3 centimes; rail transport 3.3 centimes.

Wie viel kostet der Verkehr die Allgemeinheit?
Als externe Kosten werden Kosten bezeichnet, die nicht von den Verkehrsteilnehmenden selber bezahlt werden, sondern von der Allgemeinheit (z. B. Luftverschmutzung), von Dritten (z. B. Unfälle) oder künftigen Generationen (Klimaerwärmung).
Gesamte externe Kosten des Verkehrs 2017: 13,4 Mrd. Franken. Davon entfallen 9,5 Mrd. Franken oder 71% auf den privaten motorisierten Verkehr, die sich wie folgt verteilen:
• Luftverschmutzung 3,3 Mrd.
• Lärm 2,1 Mrd.
• Klima 1,6 Mrd.
• Natur und Landschaft 990 Mio.
• Unfälle 730 Mio.
Pro Personenkilometer kostet der motorisierte Privatverkehr die Allgemeinheit 7,8 Rappen. Zum Vergleich: öffentlicher Strassenverkehr 6,3 Rappen; Schienenverkehr 3,3 Rappen.
