Input by a Biologist and ocean activist regarding coral reefs

  1. „Oxygen generated by the ocean“

The post suggests (incorrectly) that coral reefs produce O2.
Trees are plants that produce O2 (Even trees need O2 to breathe, they just produce much more than they use.).

Corals are colonies of animals that need oxygen to breathe. They live in an inner symbiontic (give and take) relationship with tiny green algae which are „microscopic plants“, producing O2 and food for the coral...

- Oceans do provide the planet with most of its oxygen – but it’s not the coral reefs that are producing it!
-> What organisms (living things) produce most of the O2 in the ocean? What is the process by which they produce oxygen?

  1. It is not only „trash“ or only „dirty air“ that causes the corals to die!

-> What causes corals to die? What causes mass coral bleaching? How could we stop it?

  1. To check facts directly and to get in touch with an organisation or expert:

Watch the video with Dr. Dave Wachenfeld from the Gt. Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority!
Write to info@gbrmpa.gov.au ...and possibly skype with him?

  1. „Reef restoration“ can only work if the factors that are causing corals to die are eliminated or reduced. Otherwise the new young corals have no chance. There are experiments being carried out to find „resistant“ corals, to transplant all over a reef, but these would be only a few species which could never replace the necessary original biodiversity (and the complex reef system including fish, etc.).
