Glacier melt - Survey preparation

27 april 2021

In the next days, we will prepare a survey about glacier melt.

Then the general idea for our collaboration with "Team Kerala" is to show heavy results on climate change. So as reported in the last post, we will bring together our results with those of "Team Kerala". They already wrote:

What are these effects? Let us go through some of them :
*Increase in global temperature*, which leads to:
*Melt of Glaciers*, as a result of which there will be a :
*Rise in Sea level*,
*Increase in precipitation and Imbalance of monsoon* which can become a major cause for :
*Floods*,
*Extinction of species* (as we saw in the beginning of the article ), that may cause:
*Ecological Imbalance*,
*Ocean Acidification* and the list remains *endless*.
So climate change is a problem that shouldn't be ignored, by anyone at anytime. In fact, it has already started creating problems on our planet.

Glacier melt - Collaboration with Team Kerala

23 April 2021

Today we talked with "Team Kerala" about our collaboration-plan.

We also created on WhatsApp a chat called "Team Kerala", which is used for our exchanging ourself. In the next weeks, we will have another meeting via Google. In that occasion, we will bring together the results of the surveys about glacier melt and floods.

Glacier melt - Interview with Team Basque

Questions:

- How many glaciers do you have in your near?

Since 2011, the Pyrenean glaciers have lost 63 hectares of ice and some 19 million tons of water. It is more or less what a small reservoir fits. In 1850 there were 52 glaciers in the Pyrenees. In 2020 there are only 19. Their disappearance, which is expected in just 30 years, will not be an environmental disaster, as they store relatively little water.

- Which school subjects are talking about "glacier melt" in your school?

We in our school have subjects to choose from and in our case we have not chosen that syllabus, that is, biology and geology, but we have asked our classmates and they have told us that they have not studied it yet.

- Do you think that something could happen, if a glacier starts to melt interely? (Natur catastrophes like a Zunami, an earthquake...)

We believe that if the glaciers began to melt, the world would have many consequences, such as the increase in sea water levels, the disappearance of many species, and there would be much more salt water and less fresh water.

- Why do you think are glaciers melting? What's in your opinion the main reason?

We believe that glaciers are melting due to the rapidity of climate change, the reason is us because we are destroying the world by extinguishing animals.

What we achieved today and forecast for next week (15.04.2021)

Today

Karla and I went to Wald to visit my half-sister to do the interview with her. It went really well and was very interesting. Both Karla and I learned many new things about our topic.

Next week

Next week, Karla and I will put the interview we in writing. Also we will finish up our survey with the new information we have from the interview and publish the survey.

What we achieved today and forecast for next week (08.04.2021)

Today

Today we worked on befter step 1 (Imagination) and thought about what we hope the result of our project will be.

We also did some more research for our project in general but also to prepare ourselfs for the interview with my half-sister.

Additionally we further prepared our survey, which we will publish in two weeks time.

Next week (15.04.2021)

Next week, we will do the interview with my sister. We will record the audio, so that we can put it in writing another time.

Interview questions for next week (15.04.2021)

These are the questions we are going to ask my half-sister in the interview next week:

  1. How did you start this line of work? Why did you choose it? (What would be interesting about this job)
  2. What are the positive sides of herbal medicine?(To see the benefits)
  3. What are the negative sides of herbal medicine?(To know about the dangers)
  4. Would you always recommend using herbal medicine? If not, why? (Her opinion about it)
  5. Why is it, that some countries use more natural remedies and others don’t?(What is it like in other countries?)
  6. What kind of plants can be used for medical reasons?(How many plants are there?)
  7. Which ones do you think actually help? Which ones do you use?(Her experience and opinion)
  8. Is there a chance of reduction in the number/amount of medical plants available due to constant usage? Have you ever faced such a situation, or do you think there will be a situation like that in the future? (Possible shortage of medical plants)
  9. Artificial fertilizers can also reduce the effect of medical plants. What opinion do you have about that statement? (Are artifical fertilizers dangerous for the medical plants?)
  10. How is the use of medical plants beneficial or harmful for the environment? (Does it affect the environment?)

We are positive, that this interview will go very well and give us important information for our project.

Step 3: Experience

At the beginning, we quickly decided which topic we would deal with. On the Internet we saw that greening on the roofs is a current topic.

Unfortunately, we did not find a collaboration partner, so we were not able to work with teams from other countries.

We came up with the idea to interview companies that deal with green roofs. We set up questions in German and sent them to four different companies. One of the companies is located in Germany. Fortunately, we received a prompt response from three different companies. First we had to translate the German version into English. With the knowledge of these companies we were able to put together a text that gave a lot of informative information about green roofs. Overall, we had to research almost nothing on the Internet, because these interviews were already very extensive.

Step 3: Experience

We asked someone from Kerala to do a collaboration with us. Unfortunately the interest was only on one side and the corona virus affected our chances on a collaboration, so we can't include another country in our project.

The Grün Stadt Zürich rejected us aswell at first. But after a few e-mails and some convincing, they agreed on an interview.

But overall our experiences are really good and we have many informations and sources for our topic. So we are confidently looking forward on doing our project.

Step 3 Experience

It was not a really new experience according to my topic because I have dealt with this before too. But it was interesting to make such a project like this and also going to publish this. I never really published something on a website, just like on the social media.
