Working Hypothesis Urban Gardening

Our Working Hypothesis

We think people want to have more green places in the cities but they dont have the time or knowledge to make it happen.

I couldnt find anything yet

I heard in the radio that the people in the cities wish more  green places and bring back some life. (Like animals and flowers)

At the interview our hypothesis got confirmed.

The Apprentice said, that people actually dont do urban gardening, if they dont have time or the green thumb.

Concept, Timeplan - Diseases of trees and foreign plants in the city of Zurich

(I) Names of research team (Who?):
- Kevin & Tamara

(II) Your Question (What?)
- Wider question (with link to your post): What diseases threaten the trees in the city of Zurich?
- Refined question: (1) How can diseases be stopped? (2) Why are foreign plants really bad for our enviroment?

(III) Your Answer: Project description, methods/techniques, etc. (How?)
- Interview with an biologist

- Survey about the knowledge from others about trees
Do you think that you have a lot of sick trees in your country / your area where you live?
Do you know any of these? (some examples)
Which tree diseases are present in your next big city?
Which neophytes are present in your next big city?
etc.

- Presentation
Most common tree species
Diseases
Foreign plants / invasive plants

Product: Presentation with all information

(IV) Diverse, e.g. material needed, expert proposals, difficulties
-phone, laptop, biologist, survey tool, powerpoint

(V) Expert's Comment:

- We asked a biologist named Julia Fürst and she answered us a lot of questions.

(VI) Goal/Result: Website Post

- Structured and friendly to read

Electric cars in cities - what is the goal of our project and how can we achieve it?

Project by Nils and Dylan

Our goal in this project is to find out how the environment would change if everyone would only drive around Zurich in electric cars. In order to find out, we want to come to an exact solution with our own research and various interviews.

We think that the future will be all electric cars and we will not drive gasoline cars anymore. We also think that there will be very crazy and fast electric cars with lots of cool gadgets. From our point of view the future will be much healthier than today. Because we have too much CO2 emissions from all gasoline cars. So more green could be brought back to earth and that would be much healthier for humans. Also we can imagine that the cars can still be driven by themselves, without the help of a steering wheel or something. We find it interesting and could imagine a lot of spaced out stuff.

In our project I expect that we can show a part of this big topic and answer our own questions. We also want to learn more about the electric car and gain experience ourselves. Even if we don't know everything and can't say what we can expect in the future, I think it is important to get some information about this topic and in my opinion it is our future.

Concept, time plan - survey on climate-changing measures

I Julian, Lukas and Livia

II How can you get people to implement climate-chaning measures?

- What do people already know about climate-changing measures?
- Where are the main costs if you do nothing for the climate?
- Why don't people implement climate-changing measures?

III Survey on climate-changing measures

Survey in german/english for every age group.

Possible questions:

- Which measures do you already know of?
- What do you already do for our climate?
- How much do you do for the climate?
- Why don't you implement certain measures? (lack of information, lack of money, lack of motivation etc.)
- What would it take you to implement those measures?
- Where do you think are main costs of doing nothing about the climate change?

Product: results of our survey + seperate post

IV We're going to create a survey on an online tool.

For the answer to the question about the costs which would arise if we do nothing, we want to ask a specialist. Who this is going to be isn't certain yet.

V Isn't certain yet.

VI It should be well structured with clear headings and texts. It should also have enough pictures for better understanding. The results of the survey and the calculations should be visible on our post.

Working Hypothesis - Effects of buildings on climate & environment

The fundamental question we face with our project is: "Which builiding material combined with which surface results in the best combination for buildings in city considering the impact on climate and environment?" In addition we ask ourselves which is the worst combination to determine the difference.

The answer to this question is really complex and requires a lot of research to answer it finally. From our point of view at the beginning of the project we think that a combination between natural stone as a building material and a planted facade will be the optimal concept. As the worst combination we imagine a combination between concrete and a dark surface which reflects strongly. The difference between these two models considering climate and environment will be huge, thats for sure.

Imagination of Survey on climate-changing measures

We hope to get a lot of data from our survey and to get people to care about these things. The survey should have more than 10 questions. We will make two versions. One in German and one in English to get more international participants. Our goal is to at least get 100 participants.

Surely we will be able to find some participants, which aren't from Switzerland.

We want to find a person, which is able to calculate us, how much it'd cost if we don't do anything about the environment.

Lost a lot of Progress, because it didn't save the post. Will have to write it again...

Oxygen generated by the Ocean

In Our Project, Esosa and I would like to know more about the coral reefs.

Land plants only produce 1/3 of the oxygen we breathe, the rest comes from the ocean. The dying of the coral reefs affects all species from marine life to humankind. We would like to do a comparison to a City Tree in Zürich and calculate the amount of oxygen which is produced by the tree compared to the corals in the ocean. Further we would like to get to know more about how exactly corals affect us and the air we breathe. Another aim is to get in touch with an Organisation who deals with replanting of corals and the restauration of coral reefs. We also thought about covering some other questions. For example, how to prevent all coral reefs from becoming extinct by 2050, or is it possible to restore the riff like before and are there any statistics that show how the reef is doing at the moment?

Research: City trees

Neophyte:

  • We have planned to visit a booth at the marketplace in Oerlikon on October 24, 2020. The host "Natur liegt Nahe" would have a booth where they would educate about neophytes.
  • We have prepared questions for the excursion.
  • I went to the Oerlikon marketplace on October 24, 2020, and gathered information and sources. I also interviewed Julia Fürst, a master student in "Biodiversity and Conservation Biology" and "Nature Conservation Biology" who works in the federal research institute in Birmensdorf. She answered our questions. She also gave me more basic information about the problem.

Imagination Urban Gardening

Imagination

- People already doing some Urban Gardening without knowing.

- We want to show people how they can do their part and let them know a bit more

- bring back more green space to the cities

- spread the knowledge we gain out of this project

- motivate people to do some gardening with easy steps

Expetations

- I think it will be hard to do an interview on the street. It could be a struggle that people take their time and maybe the weather isnt good as well.

- For the Interview in the shop it could be difficult to find a shop were they are open to help or find a shop which has time for us.

- The survey could be a success. I know a lot of people also around the world, so we will be able to see different views all over the world to this topic.

- I can imagine that our plan might not work out and we spontaneously change our plans.

Research - urban gardening

Research about this topic:

What is urban gardening?

Urban gardening came from the USA to Europe and got big in the '90s. The focus is on beautifying and enriching life in the city and creating new communities. It has many different types of urban gardening. These different types you can find in the first link.
The motto of urban gardening is recycling instead of high-tech, creativity instead of professionalism.

Urban Gardening and Urban Farming have existed since the construction of urban developments. The lack of transport facilities and the short shelf life of food made it impossible to produce it in regions far away from the demand for this food. With increasing globalization and improved transport routes, the knowledge of how to grow vegetables and fruit was then lost again.
Nowadays, a large part of the urban population is again interested in producing their own vegetables and fruit.

In Switzerland, we have many shops where you can buy things for urban gardening. For example in the second link there you can find a shop in Wädenswil, Switzerland.
