Pre-Task 9 WWTP

The Werdhölzli Zürich Wastewater treatment plant is instructed to clean the waste water in my hometown.
There are 87 workers involved to serve over 471'275 people with cleaned water.
Due to its design up to 500'000 cubic metres can be cleansed each day.

[picture has to be uploaded correctly]

My water is purified at the Flos wastewater treatment plant (ARA) in Wetzikon. The water of the city of Wetzikon, Aathal/Seegräben, Auslikon (Pfäffikon) including the baths, Ober-Balm (Hittnau) and Grüt (Gossau) is cleaned there. They are also responsible for the sewerage system of the town of Wetzikon.More...

My ARA in Oetwil am See

For my waste water, the ARA Esslingen und Oetwil am See is responsible. It covers 4848 people from Oetwil am See and 8888 people from Esslingen (2020). However, the size of the sewer is for 17,000 inhabitants. The ARA is in Esslingen 8133 and was founded in 1965.

The wastewater is collected via urban drainage and flows into the main sewer system. Due to the topographical location of our communities, part of the wastewater must be conveyed to the main collection sewer with the help of nine pumping stations.

Because the wastewater treatment plant cannot receive an unlimited amount of wastewater (210l/s), the municipality of Egg and Oetwil am See also have four additional rainwater retention basins at their disposal in case of large rainfalls, which can be used to collect the first wastewater accumulation.

The cleaning efficiency is 98%.

WWTP Rüti

The municipality of Rüti operates a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Gruebensteg for about 14,500 inhabitants (approx. 16,750 population equivalents, including industry and commerce). The municipalities involved are Dürnten, with the village part Tann (2,650 PE) and Bubikon, area Kämmoos-Egelsee (350 PE).

In rainy weather, up to 250 l/sec of wastewater can be fed to the WWTP. Larger quantities are retained in stormwater tanks and later fed to the WWTP. After the 3-stage, i.e. mechanical-biological-chemical treatment, the wastewater is discharged into the Jona. Every year, about 11,500 m3 of digested sludge is dewatered and sent for incineration. The digester gas produced is processed in a combined heat and power plant and the electrical energy generated, approx. 250,000 kWh per year, is fed into the Rüti public utility grid. The waste heat is used to heat the digester rooms and the plant operation.

The WWTP was expanded between 1989 and 1994 and has been adapted to the new regulations to date. In the future, too, adjustments and renovations will be necessary on an ongoing basis due to new findings. Current planning goes up to 2020 and expects a load of up to 20,000 PE.

Real life energy calculation

How much electricity does a 4-people-household need? What are the saving potentials per year?

Conditions:

--> Number of people: 4

--> Building: Appartement

--> Additional costs: 1200 Euros

--> Additional cost: once a year

--> Zip code 10115 (Berlin)

If you reduce the CO2 emissions to 1.2 t/year (using conventional electricity), how many trees do you need to tie up the amount of CO2?

Task 6: Döner

In an average week Justin consumes about 3 Döner. How many hours could Justin have operated an LED lamp with the energy he consumed ?

100g of Döner contain 770 kJ

1 Döner is about 330g

the energy consumption of an average LED lamp is about 60 Wh per hour.

(1 Wh = 3600 Ws (Wattsekunde) = 3600 Joule = 3,6 Kilojoule (kJ).

Reallife energy calculation

Debora and I wanted to find out how long you need to ride a bike to produce enough energy to dry your hair with a hair dryer.

We found out that a women (1.70m/63kg) is able to produce 120 Watt per hour, if she rides the bike for one hour.

Every time after showering we both blow dry our hair, but how much watt does a hair dryer need?
We found out that a hair dryer needs 2000 Watt to dry a womans midle long hair in 8 minutes.

So we calculated the number of hours needed to produce 2000 watt while riding the bike.

What is the result?
