Transport

Transport

There are many ways how to transport things. For example through air with an airplane or through the streets with a truck. But we're going to focus on the transport of things through seas because eighty percent of global merchandise are transported via rivers and seas. International transport routes are a reminder of the high level of global economic integration. That's why we need stable and safe transport routes as well as ports. But there are also problems involving maritime routes, which cause pollution and noise.

Pollution

Almost everything is transported by ships, like for example oil, bananas or smartphones. And because so many things are transported by ships this is a problem for the seas and the animals that live in them. The amount of pollution caused by ships is almost the same as the one caused by road traffic. This is why the ozone levels are rising fast.

Noise

The oceans are becoming noisier now than ever before. Military sonars are causing high sound levels, which are comparable with the sound of a jet taking of. Some air guns can be up to 1000 times louder than a ship's motor. These noises cause a lot of stress to animals. For example whales can not navigate properly, they can not search for food, they can not communicate well with the mates and they can't avoid predators.

In conclusion global transport can be useful to distribute goods but it causes big problems for the environment and the animals that live in those areas.
